90's Rave Culture Woodcut Smiley Face
More and More I find myself drawn to 90's rave culture. Probably because it was an era that I grew up in and fully embraced (perhaps a little bit too much at times). However recently the iconography of that era has really started to resonate with me.
I didn't appreciate it at the time, but now I do, and that interest flows through into this new piece. The Smiley face has been a mainstay of counter culture for decades, and here it is realised using the pill designs of the 90's rave scene. Take a closer look and see if any of these designs fire any synapses.
Created from nearly 200 individually engraved pill shapes, the effect is really striking and something I'm incredibly proud of.
The pills are cut into 3mm birch veneer, then mounted on to a royal blue mount in a 40 x 40cm black frame. The frame itself is made from recycled polystyrene and comes with a glass front.
